It’s nearly been a full year since news about McDonald’s new McPlant platform broke. Here’s the story from way back in November 2020. In the interim the Golden Arches launched a range of celeb branded meals as well as their trio of Crispy Chicken Sandwiches. Indeed, if I’m honest I’d kinda forgotten about the McPlant. I assumed McD’s had too. Based on news this week – they haven’t.
This week the brand announced November 2021 will see eight test locations for their new plant based burger. Namely – Irving and Carrollton, Texas, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jennings and Lake Charles, Louisiana and El Segundo and Manhattan Beach, California. If you’re lucky enough to live near these, you can sample the new burger from November 3rd while supplies last.
McDonald’s tapped Beyond Meat for help in creating the new option. Personally I prefer the Impossible patty by huge amounts, but Beyond is definitely the runner up in the plant-based burger space for me. It’s good, just not great. I’m personally hoping the McDonald’s-Beyond partnership takes the burger even further. We shall see.
The McPlant has already been tested in various international markets including Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria and most recently the U.K. In announcing the US test launch, McDonald’s write the burger uses a mix of, “peas, rice and potatoes. The patty is served on a sesame seed bun with tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and a slice of American cheese. It has the iconic taste of a McDonald’s burger, because it is one.”
