As we wrote about a few weeks back now, Del Taco recently launched a brand new Crispy Chicken product. The all new chicken is available in both a selection of tacos as well as this “chicken & fries box”. The basic box comes with three strips and a medium portion of Del Taco’s famous crinkle cut fries. There’s also a range of dipping sauces provided, but sadly the restaurant forgot my selection as part of this order so I can’t report back 🙁
Anyway, how is the new Del Taco Crispy chicken you ask? The first thing you notice about the all new is the golden fried exterior. The battered coating on these chicken strips is relatively thin compared to some of their peers. I kinda like this, some of the heavier battered chicken strips out there lend themselves to portions of all batter, no chicken. There’s no risk of that here.
Most disappointing about these however was the chicken itself. As you can see from the shots below, these aren’t chicken breast strips. They’re more nugget like in nature, spongey and elastic when bent or compressed:
These are quite different to the Arby’s Tenders for example, which are visibly chicken. I know this isn’t a negative for everyone, some love the approach.
The portion is a very decent size for the $4.80 I paid viaDoorDash (in store is $4), though the greasiness of the chicken and fries combined started to overwhelm toward the end. I’d definitely want to lighten things up with some of the new fresh guac next time.
